Goldberg Variations

Yizhar Karshon performs Johann Sebastian Bach’s iconic work on the harpsichord, in its authentic form.

The harpsichordist and conductor Yizhar Karshon is one of the most outstanding musicians working in Baroque music in Israel.

He studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, in the musicology department of the Hebrew University, and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Jörg-Andreas Bötticher. After returning to Israel he became one of the founders of the ensemble Barrocada (active since 2007), with which he has performed widely in Israel and Europe and recorded several CDs.

Alongside his work with Barrocada he often appears both as a soloist and as a continuo player with all of Israel’s major ensembles. He has also conducted concerts with Barrocada, the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. In 2014 he recorded Charles Dieupart’s Suites for the German label Carpe Diem.

Since 2018 he has been director of the Mevaseret Zion Conservatory, and since 2023 a harpsichord teacher at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. In 2024 he conducted the academy vocal department’s opera production, Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea.
